Tannhäuser
Metropolitan Opera House, Thu, November 30, 2023
Broadcast
Debut : Christian Gerhaher
Tannhäuser (479)
Richard Wagner | Richard Wagner
Performance was interrupted by climate protesters shouting and unfurling banners from the balcony reading ‘No Opera on a Dead Planet’, requiring the curtain to come down twice, delaying the performance over twenty minutes. Once resumed the house lights were set to half for the remainder of the performance. In a statement, Extinction Rebellion said the demonstration was timed to “coincide with the main character’s declaration that ‘love is a spring to be drunk from.’”

The revival of this production is made possible by a gift from the Metropolitan Opera Club
