1897-98

There was no resident company at the Metropolitan Opera House this season. Henry E. Abbey had died on October 16, 1896, just before the start of the 96-97 season. Abbey's partner, Maurice Grau, spent 1897-98 reorganizing the company. Between 1898 and 1900, Grau also managed the four summer seasons at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in London. Casts and repertory for this period at both houses reflect the common management. While Grau was reorganizing, Walter Damrosch and Charles A. Ellis formed the Damrosch-Ellis Company and gave performances at the Metropolitan Opera House. Among the events of the season which ran from January 17 through February 20, 1898, was Nellie Melba's only performance in New York of the title role of Aida on 1/24/98. The New York Symphony accompanied all performances.
