Review 1:
Review of Martin Mayer in Opera
Zeffirelli's "La Bohème" was also on display in these early weeks of the season, and I went to hear the leading roles sung by a pair of suitably young artists; Hei-Kyung Hong and Richard Leech in the second appearance of his debut season. Both were marvelous. Leech is growing into a first-class lyric tenor, and Hong is beginning to move towards the lirico-spinto sound where I think her future lies. She was a much more confident Mimi this year than two years ago. Brian Schexnayder was a solid Marcello; Vernon Hartman and John Cheek sang the other Bohemians well. Sona Ghazarian, unfortunately, was a disastrous Musetta, sharp enough to ruin the third act quartet, and dramatically "sehr Mitteleuropäische." There are a half dozen junior sopranos on the Met roster who could do this role better; why is she imported? The conductor was Donato Renzetti, making his Met debut.
