Review 1:

Bill Zakariasen in the Daily News

On Thursday, bass Justino Diaz tackled the title role on "Macbeth" for the first time. As was the case when he sang Iago in "Otello" earlier this season, he had no trouble whatsoever coping with the baritone tessitura. Even though it was apparent he was suffering a slight cold, his voice was notably powerful and resonant throughout As an actor, he wasn't exactly subtle, but be made all the proper dramatic points on cue.

Illness forced Shirley Verrett to withdraw from her first Met Lady Macbeth, and once again soprano Olivia Stapp came to the rescue. She had high notes and temperament to burn, though at times her middle register turned oddly muffled.

Bass Nicolai Ghiaurov was an authoritative Banquo, and tenor Bruno Beccaria sang Macduff quite beautifully. But even more impressive was the new Malcolm — tenor Mark Baker. A big man with a big, trumpeting voice, he sounded as if he could rescue the Met from its current heldentenorial problems with "Siegfried."
