Met Opera: Cast Changes In “Giovanni”
Three artists who were not involved in this season's earlier Metropolitan Opera performances of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" have joined the cast. On Wednesday night, Hildegard Behrens undertook the role of Donna Anna, while Maria Ewing and Julien Robbins were the likable young lovers Zerlina and Masetto.
The magnetic Miss Behrens dominated every scene she was in, singing with exhilarating passion, albeit with a larger-than-life quality that might be more appropriate in the heroic creations of Verdi, Wagner and Strauss. This was a Donna Anna with more than a hint of Elektra.
Miss Ewing and Mr. Robbins made agreeable impressions in their respective roles. Miss Ewing has a distinctive, affecting voice and a charming stage presence, although she did not seem to be able to reach an agreement with the conductor Jeffrey Tate on the correct tempo for "Batti, batti" and had an occasional tendency toward exaggerated enunciation. Mr. Robbins brought a boyish bumptiousness to his part, singing skillfully and with bravado.
