Review 1:
Dale Harris in the Guardian (UK)
Later in the season Pilar Lorengar took over the role. Though “Per Pieta” is now beyond her vocal means, she gave a wonderfully satisfying performance, touchingly acted and with the exception noted above, excellently sung. The rest of the cast – David Rendall, James Morris, Donald Gramm and Kathleen Battle – were musically proficient. James Levine elicited beautiful sounds from the Metropolitan Opera’s orchestra and gave a lively, if still tentative, account of the music.
By the time Jeffrey Tate, new on the staff of the Met, took over for a singly performance all signs of tentativeness had disappeared. Taking full advantage of the work that Levine had done with the orchestra he illuminated every aspect of the opera’s complexity, its elegance, its irony, its passion and was deservedly cheered by the sold-out house.
