MANUGUERRA IB BACK IN ‘BOHÈME’ AT MET

Matteo Manuguerra, a baritone who made his Metropolitan Opera debut in January, made his first appearance as Marcello in the company’s production of “La Bohème” in a performance given on Friday night. He was in a cast that included Richard Tucker, Colette Boky and Gabriella Tucci. Miss Tucci replaced the indisposed Teresa Stratas in the part of Mimi. Fausto Cleva conducted.

Mr. Manuguerra has a robust and handsome voice that went well with the part of the painter Marcello, but his stage personality, as revealed on this occasion did not seem particularly bohemian. His face registered little, if any, reaction to what was going on and his acting was not very expressive, either. Since he many have not felt altogether comfortable in his initial entry into this production, he may loosen up somewhat in future performances.
