INGE BORKH SINGS DYER'S WIFE ROLE

Inge Borkh, a German soprano who last appeared with the Metropolitan Opera 10 years ago, as Elektra in the Richard Strauss opera, returned to the company on Friday night to sing the role of the Dyer's Wife in the same composer's "Die Frau ohne Schatten."

Always an artist to be respected, Miss Borkh gave an honorable performance. She knows the musical style, and her voice cut through the orchestra easily. A veteran singer, she had difficulties with high notes, which lacked body, but she was resourceful enough to make her singing effective on the whole.

Her portrayal was interesting. She stressed the wayward emotions of the part. Her face, in particular, mirrored the feelings of the Dyer's Wife, who is by turns shrewish, exultant, moody and sensuous.
