"Trovatore" for "Grimes" at Met

At least 400 customers out of 4,000 showed that they felt strongly pro "Peter Grimes" last night at the Metropolitan Opera. When "Il Trovatore" replaced the scheduled "Grimes" they asked for their money back or a ticket for another performance of the Benjamin Britten opus, which thus far in its revival, hasn't brought crowds to the box office. There were many empty seats in the auditorium.

Because tenor Jon Vickers, suddenly ill with a virus, was unable to sing the title role, "Grimes" was cancelled and "Il Trovatore," a Verdi bread-and-butter opera, was substituted. Arturo Sergi, Vickers' "cover," has been ill in the hospital with a respiratory ailment, and there was not time enough to import a tenor from Europe. It was only official at noon that Vickers couldn't go on.

Usually there is more than one ready replacement for each leading role, but with a non-repertory item like "Grimes," such was not the case. Others were at work on the part but not ready with it.

This was one occasion when it paid NOT to be a subscriber. The latter cannot get their money refunded for a change of opera, but a single-ticket holder can, based on the premise that he has contracted for a specific opera while the subscriber is only guaranteed that there will be no repeats in his series.
