Review 1:

Review of John Ardoin in Musical America
The season’s first “Meistersinger,” October 21, was a respectable one, never quite routine, yet never quite inspired. The beautiful production by Robert O’Hearn and Nathaniel Merrill still gives immense pleasure, and it was wonderful to see such a handsome and credible pair of young lovers as Sandor Konya and Ingrid Bjoener, as Walther and Eva. Mr. Konya, especially, was in marvelous voice, and sang with freshness and vigor. Another fine performance was that of Pogner by Ezio Flagello. Otto Edelmann’s Sachs is not as vocally sturdy as it once was, but he still brings enormous dramatic insight to the part. Karl Dönch was again a fine Beckmesser, Norman Mittlemann , a very good Kothner and Gladys Kriese, an excellent Magdalene. Joseph Rosenstock conducted.
