Review 1:
Review of John Ardoin in Musical America
The March 5 "Eugene Onegin," featuring the first Met Lensky of Barry Morell, was a leaden affair until midway in Act II, when things came to life with the appearance of veteran Alessio de Paolis, whose charm and humor as Triquet brought the proceedings from the routine to the enjoyable. It is sad to note that this was de Paolis' final appearance at the Met; this irreplaceable artist was killed in a car accident the following Monday. (See Obituaries.) From that moment, through Lenksy's challenge of Onegin, the duel and the final meeting of Onegin and Tatyana, the performance was gripping and passionate.
The best solo singing of the evening came from Morell in Act II, Scene 2 (for the life of me I cannot remember Henry Reese's English translation of Lensky's great aria), and from Giorgio Tozzi, as Prince Gremin, in his Act III aria. The balance of the cast included Leontyne Price, William Dooley, Joann Grillo (in her first Olga, a very small-voiced one), William Walker (in his first Zaretski), Lili Chookasian and Gladys Kreise. Thomas Schippers conducted, sometimes with sweep, sometimes with seeming indifference.?
