Ariadne auf Naxos
Metropolitan Opera House, Fri, January 10, 1964
Debut : Donald Gramm
Ariadne auf Naxos (11)
Richard Strauss | Hugo von Hofmannsthal
Review 1:
Review of Michael Brozen in Musical America
Martin Rich, replacing the indisposed Silvio Varviso, conducted his first "Ariadne" at the Met on January 10. He elicited a great deal of excitement from the score in addition to being in complete control of the orchestral and vocal forces. His regard for the singers did not hinder his keeping things moving at a nice pace throughout the evening.
Other Met firsts were Lucine Amara, as Ariadne; Donald Gramm (debut), as Truffaldin; and Gabor Carelli, as Brighella.
Though this was her first Met Ariadne, Miss Amara was no newcomer to the part – it was as Ariadne that she made her operatic debut, and she has sung the role since in other houses. On this occasion, she displayed a good comic flair in the Prologue and sang the Opera with elegance, if with an occasional harsh high note.
Messrs. Gramm and Carelli slipped into their places neatly and unobtrusively. Though he is a prominent figure in New York's musical life, one will have to wait for Mr. Gramm to sing a larger role to get a better idea how he will do in the house.
