L'Elisir d'Amore
Metropolitan Opera House, Sat, January 13, 1962
L'Elisir d'Amore (95)
Gaetano Donizetti | Felice Romani
Review 1:
Review of John Ardoin in Musical America
After an absence of eight seasons Ferruccio Tagliavini returned to the Metropolitan Opera in one of his finest roles. His voice proved as sweet and solid as ever, and he gave the audience a sample of legato and bel canto rarely heard from tenors these days. It was obviously his night, and the audience gave Mr. Tagliavini a warm welcome at the outset and an uproarious ovation which halted the performance for five minutes or more after his superb, limp singing of “Una turtiva lagrima.”
Salvatore Baccaloni was on hand to join his old friend as Dr. Dulcamara. This has always been one of Mr. Baccaloni's outstanding characterizations, and though he brings much less voice to the part than in past years, he nonetheless imbued the role with a complete buffo mastery. Anna Moffo was again a superb Adina, and Frank Guarrera was the excellent Belcore.
