Das Rheingold
Ring Cycle [84] Uncut
Metropolitan Opera House, Wed, December 27, 1961
Debut : Gottlob Frick
Das Rheingold (101)
Richard Wagner | Richard Wagner
Ring Cycle [84] Uncut
Review 1:
Review of Robert Sabin in Musical America
It was a pity that Gottlob Frick, one of Europe’s finest basses, could not have made his Metropolitan Opera debut in a more prominent role than that of Fafner, but, even so, his superb voice, dramatic authority and exemplary diction made themselves felt. We should rejoice that he is there.
Also new to their roles at the Metropolitan were Mr. Olvis, and Mr. Wiemann, who had taken the role of Fafner at the December 16 performance. If Mr. Wiemann did not make Fasolt’s clumsy, but touching, affection for Freia as moving as had Jerome Hines, he nonetheless sang and acted convincingly.
Mr. Olvis was an excellent Froh. His trim, good-looking figure was a welcome relief from the varying degrees of bulging fat to which we are (also) accustomed in Wagnerian stage figures, and his voice was fresh and assured. The rest of the cast were again in good form.
