Dorothy Kirsten In 'Butterfly' at Metropolitan

"Madama Butterfly" was repeated last night at the Metropolitan with Dorothy Kirsten in the leading role and Rosalind Elias as Suzuki. Barry Morell replaced Eugenio Fernandi who was originally listed for Pinkerton. The remainder of the cast was intact and Jean Morel, as before, conducted the orchestra.

Miss Kirsten has sung Butterfly on other occasions and she is by now wholly familiar with every shading and nuance that the role requires. A flawless expressiveness of mien was coupled with an expansiveness of vocal production. Aside from some slight edginess in the highest register, her voice had richness and tonal color and she sang everywhere with clarity and personal projection. Rosalind Elias lent a smoothness of sound in her fine interpretation as Cio-Cio-San's faithful attendant. Mr. Morell once again proved himself to be a Pinkerton of vocal eloquence, while Jean Morel disclosed fine orchestral color in his direction of the score.
