Gounod's 'Faust' Repeated at The Metropolitan
Gounod's "Faust" was repeated last night at the Metropolitan Opera House with Giuseppe Campora in the title role, Victoria de los Angeles as Marguerite and Cesare Siepi as Mephistopholes. Both Mr. Campora and Mr. Siepi were heard in their roles for the first time this season and Jean Morel led the orchestra in a clear, intelligent, if rather retiring performance, of the score.
Mr. Campora's singing was both earnest and careful and much of it very lovely, indeed. He cut loose with a healthy share of long-ringing high notes, although few of them were accomplished without obvious flirtation with lower neighbors. Mr. Siepi's voice was rather married by coarseness in the first act, but this gave way to a vocal and dramatic performance of high temperament and character.
Miss de los Angeles was at her marvelous best. For her, it was an evening of setting afloat radiant pianissimos and of a dramatic performance of incomparable sweetness and warmth. Frank Guarrera as Valentin, Mildred Miller as Siebel, and Thelma Votipka and Calvin Marsh completed the cast.
