Blanche Thebom Triumphs in Carmen debut for Met

Blanche Thebom, the Ohio-born contralto, made a triumphant hit with her first Carmen for the Metropolitan Opera Co.

At Public Hall yesterday afternoon she and her singing partners, the orchestra – in fact, the whole company – genuinely thrilled the audience with their realistic performance.

Many adjectives fit Miss Thebom. Her voice yesterday was ringingly clear; forceful and definitely top quality. Her acting was sexy, vicious and completely abandoned in the characterization. Hers was the best Carmen in Public Hall for many, many years – and I am not forgetting that Rise Stevens has sung it here lately.

While Thebom was the star, definitely, Lucine Amara made a tremendous impression with her Micaela; she is a soprano we’ll hear from more and more. Richard Tucker’s Don José was polished and exciting vocally, especially his “Flower Song” in the second act.

Heidi Krall, of Toledo and Cleveland, distinguished herself in the role of Frasquita and those two old-timers, baritone George Cehanovsky and tenor Alessio de Paolis in the roles of smugglers, brought pleasure to the large audience .

In the lesser parts, those who helped round out this fine performance were Osie Hawkins as Zuniga and Margaret Rogerro as Mercedes.

Frank Guarrera’s Escamillo came off well and the famous “Toreador Song” sparkled. Tobor Kozma’s direction from the pit was excellent and the crowd (20% greater than last year’s Friday matinee performance) enjoyed every minute of this perfect opera.
