Review 1:

Review signed A. B. in Musical America

Jean Fenn, who sang her first Metropolitan Violetta on this occasion, appeared at short notice after both Dorothy Kirsten and Licia Albanese had had to withdraw from the rôle. Noticeably nervous, the soprano managed to acquit herself very well under the circumstances. An attractive Violetta, she acted with considerable assurance, achieving an admirable balance between the extravagant gestures of grand opera and the economic style of latter-day acting. Her singing, too, was highly effective, on the whole. After the technical hurdles of the "Sempre libera" had been (passably) surmounted, Miss Fenn went on to achieve very gratifying results, particularly in her "Alfredo, Alfredo, di questo cuore" and "Se una pudica vergine." The otherwise familiar cast included Jan Peerce, Giuseppe Valdengo, Margaret Roggero, Maria Leone, Alessio De Paolis, George Cehanovsky, Algerd Brazis, and Osie Hawkins. Fausto Cleva conducted.
