'Alcestis' at Met
Set Svanholm Is Admetus; Cast Has 2 Other Changes
Gluck's "Alcestis" had a few changes of cast in its third performance of the season last night at the Metropolitan Opera House. Set Svanholm was heard here for the first time in the role of Admetus. The other two cast changes were unscheduled. Frank Valentino was heard in the relatively brief part of the High Priest, in place of Paul Schoeffler, who was indisposed. The still briefer part of the woman who makes the offering of fruit in Act II was assumed by Paula Lenchner, who replaced Anne Bollinger.
Kirsten Flagstad was again in the dominating role of Alcestis, and the capacity audience recalled her many times after each act. Miss Flagstad has only two more performances of the Gluck opera to sing before she retires from the operatic stage, and last night's shouts of "brava" were not only for her singing but were an expression of farewell on the part of many operagoers who did not expect to hear her again within the walls of the Metropolitan Opera House. Alberto Erede was again on the conductor's podium.
