Hilde Gueden Is Micaela As Met Repeats 'Carmen'

A non-subscription performance of Bizet's 'Carmen' at the Metropolitan Opera House Saturday night enjoyed the substantial benefits of Hilde Gueden in the role of Micaela here for the first time. Miss Gueden's singing was consistently of a very fine and appealing quality, and everything she did was in the best taste. This listener's only regret was that her diction was rather poor, but in this she was not exactly alone among the members of Saturday night's cast, and since she brought much more than average vocal beauty to her assignment, we were willing to forgive her in this matter.

Ramon Vinay sang his first Don José of the season at this repetition of the Bizet opera in its new Tyrone Guthrie-Rolf Gerard production. Mr. Vinay rose to considerable heights of dramatic intensity as the evening advanced, and his singing was sympathetic in many ways. The conductor on this occasion was Kurt Adler, Rise Stevens was again in the name-part, and Frank Guarrera again sang the role of the toreador. Other familiar members of the cast were Lucine Amara, Margaret Roggero and Osie Hawkins.
