“Faust” a Benefit

The special performance of Gounod’s “Faust” for the benefit of Mizrachi Women’s Organization at the Metropolitan Opera House last night  brought with it the first appearance here in the title role of Richard Tucker. The otherwise familiar cast included Nadine Conner as Marguerite, Jerome Hines as Mephistopheles, Frank Guarrera as Valentin, Margaret Roggero as Siebel, Thelma Votipka as Marthe and Lawrence Davidson as Wagner. Fausto Cleva conducted.

The sensuous quality of Mr. Tucker’s tenor voice is admirably suited to the delivery of Faust’s music, and much of his singing of the role was impressive. Strangely enough, he was less effective in his second act aria, “Salut demeure chaste et pure,” which wanted in stylistic distinction and, aside from the climactic top tone, was over-cautiously accounted for than in the ensuing love duet, which had much of the essential.

Miss Conner’s Marguerite was limpidly and expressively sung and touchingly acted. Mr. Hines’s Mephistopheles was vocally sumptuous and telling in action and Miss Roggero, in the most ungrateful of all trouser roles, Siebel, sang persuasively. Mr. Guarrera’s singing of Valentin’s aria was a bit on the throaty side. Excellent as usual was the Marthe of Mme. Votipka.
