Review 1:
Cecil Smith in Musical America
Hans Hotter sang the role of Kurwenal for the first time at the Metropolitan in this performance, and gave further proof of the versatility he had already shown by investing his appearances as the Flying Dutchman and the Grand Inquisitor with equally commanding musical and dramatic power. His singing was by no means a model of meticulous vocalism, and in some of the more sprightly passages of the music it was hardly more than an approximation. But his impersonation of Kurwenal was developed out of so profound and so consistent an understanding of the character, and his singing and action gave so complete and affecting a realization of the context, that it would be pettifogging to dwell on perfectionist details. His affectionate concern for Tristan in the waiting scene of the last act was warmly believable, and his expression of alarm lest his master and friend may have died when he sinks back exhausted on the couch was one of the most touching incidents of the season.
Helen Traubel, in lustrous voice, was again the Isolde, and Ramon Vinay repeated his strong and vital performance as Tristan. Fritz Reiner conducted.
