Review 1:
Review of R. K. in Musical America
The season's fourth performance of Pelléas and Mélisande on Feb. 14 presented Jarmila Novotna for the first time in the part of Mélisande. Miss Novotna's Mélisande somewhat lacked the illusive and subtle qualities so necessary to the characterization, but there is no reason to doubt that her gifts and beauty will, in time, lend themselves in complete accord with the part. There was also a new and distinguished Arkel by Nicola Moscona. He was altogether competent, vocally and histrionically. Otherwise the cast was unchanged: Martial Singher (Pelléas), Margaret Harshaw (Genevieve), Goland (Lawrence Tibbett), Yniold (Lillian Raymondi) and Lorenzo Alvary (Physician). Emil Cooper again conducted the magnificent Debussy score, and Desire Défrère was the stage director.
