Title Role of "Carmen" Is Sung by Irra Petina

Opera Has Final Performance of Season at Metropolitan

Bizet's "Carmen" was heard in its final performance of the season at the Metropolitan Opera House last night. Irra Petina made her first appearance of the season in the title role, and Wilfred Pettetier conducted, replacing Sir Thomas Beecham, who had directed the previous presentation. The cast included the Misses Albanese, Votipka and Browning and Messrs. Jobin, Warren, Cehanovsky, De Paolis, D'Angelo and Baker.

Miss Petina, whose gifts as a comedienne are indubitable, is not felicitously cast as Carmen. The note of genuine passion is missing from her impersonation and her acting and dancing were of an angularity which suggested the controlled posturing of a marionette. Her singing is competent but wanting in sensuousness and emotional conviction. Mr. Pelletier's interpretation of the score was justly paced and alert.
