Kiepura's Second Season Starts With "La Bohème"
Polish Tenor Sings Rodolfo Role at Metropolitan
Exactly a year after his debut at the Metropolitan Opera House as Rodolfo in Puccini's "La Bohème," Jan Kiepura began his second season here yesterday afternoon in the same role in a special performance for benefit of the Smith College Club's scholarship fund and alumnae service. Grace Moore sang Mimi, which was also the role of her Metropolitan debut. Marisa Morel reappeared as Musetta and Carlo Morelli as Marcello. Messrs. Cehanovsky and Cordon were Mr. Kiepura's roommates in the Parisian Bohemia. Pompillio Malatesta and Carlo Coscia completed the cast under Gennaro Papi's direction.
A hearing of two of Rodolfo's arias in the first and last acts gave an impression of the Polish tenor's singing substantially similar to that made last winter, with a tone possessing when at its best, a warm and ingratiating quality, but some unevenness of vocal clarity and ease of production. His youthful appearance, as before, was particularly well suited to his assignment. There was a virtually capacity audience and the proceeds were reported to be more than $6,000.
