Lily Pons Sings "Lucia" Despite an Indisposition

Metropolitan Audience Gives Soprano Fine Ovation

Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" was sung for the second time this season at the Metropolitan Opera House as yesterday's Christmas matinee, with Lily Pons again in the title role. Galliano Masini as Edgardo and Carlo Tagliabue as the scheming Enrico Ashton.

Miss Pons, who had been in excellent voice in her seasonal debut ten days before as the ill-fated Bride of Lammermoor, was convalescing from a recent indisposition yesterday afternoon, but the notices that made this announcement also stated that she had decided to sing as scheduled, in order not to disappoint her public. If evidence of a recent cold was not completely absent, Miss Pons's singing in the face of this handicap deserved much praise and the applause was fervent and prolonged.

Mr. Masini, as before, was in good voice, singing with expressiveness and fervor and also winning intensive plaudits. Mr. Tagliabue was a well routined Enrico and Mr. Pinza sang Raimondo's music with appropriate dignity and sonority. Nicolas Massue, the only member of the cast who had not sung in this work on December 14, was an Arturo of youthful and prepossessing appearance. Thelma Votipka and Giordano Paltrinieri completed the list of soloists under Gennaro Papi's direction.
