ATTENDANCE SETS RECORD
State and National Officials as Well as Diplomats Joint in Tribute to Soprano
Baltimore, April 2, -- Before the most brilliant assemblage of its kind ever gathered here, Lucrezia Bori tonight bade farewell to the American operatic stage. Miss Bori sang the role of Mimi in Puccini's "La Bohème" at the Lyric Theater.
It was the [start] of the Baltimore opera season by the Metropolitan Opera Company. Three performances will be given. The audience which greeted Miss Bori was larger by 600 persons than that which greeted Galli-Curci in "La Traviata" in a record performance here sixteen years ago.
The cast tonight was: Rodolfo, Nino Martini; Schaunard, George Cehanovsky; Benoit, Louis d'Angelo; Mimi, Lucrezia Bori; Parpignol, Angelo Bada; Marcello, Lawrence Tibbett; Colline, Ezio Pinza; Musetta, Helen Gleason, and Alcindoro, Louis d'Angelo. Gennaro Papi conducted.
At the conclusion of each scene in which she sang Miss Bori received a stupendous ovation. The curtain calls were numerous. At the final curtain the entire company assembled on the stage while Mayor Howard W. Jackson of Baltimore presented Miss Bori with a silver jewel box from the music lovers of Baltimore. Nearby were the Governor of Maryland and Mrs. Harry W. Nice; Edward Johnson, general manager of the Metropolitan, and Frederick R, Huber, the Metropolitan's Baltimore representative.
Mayor Jackson told Miss Bori that the music lovers of Baltimore would never forget her for what she has done for opera, especially here. He referred to the occasion several years ago when she came to Baltimore to sing, without remuneration, during a campaign to save opera for Baltimore.
Miss Bori was visibly affected by the applause when she accepted the silver casket.
