On 3/6/35, Herbert Witherspoon, former Metropolitan Opera bass, was announced as the new General Manager succeeding Giulio Gatti-Casazza. He died in his office at the opera house on 5/10/35. Edward Johnson, Metropolitan Opera tenor who had been appointed Assistant Manager, was immediately confirmed as his successor.
