Lehmann a Superb Elsa in 'Lohengrin'
The extraordinary intensity which is Lotte Lehmann's outstanding quality was imparted last night to the role of Elsa in "Lohengrin," and gave it vitality and character which are conspicuously lacking in the usual embodiments. In its wealth of significant detail Mme. Lehmann's Elsa was engrossing from the moment she stepped on the stage, and held interest to the end. And as usual the voice mirrored every detail of the action. It was not in good condition in the first act, but in the second its freedom and opulence were restored.
In this act Maria Olszewska offered a superb Ortrud, in which her gifts as an actress and singer were fully and impressively realized- this after a first act in which, reduced to silence, she spent the entire time fussing with her posture and her costume. Lauritz Melchior's singing also was magnificent; and the act was one of the notable things of the season.
The cast also included Friedrich Schorr, not always in the best of vocal condition as Telramund; Emanuel List, an excellent King Henry, and George Cehanovsky, did well as the Herald. Mr. Bodanzky, after distinguishing himself by his work in the second act, turned the third over to Karl Riedel.
