A Popular 'Tristan und Isolde'

The popular-priced "Tristan and Isolde" on the evening of Jan. 26, served as a farewell vehicle for Anny Konetzni, who made her first local appearance as Isolde. Another point of interest was the first appearance here of Ezio Pinza in the role of King Mark, although he had sung it elsewhere. Paul Althouse was Tristan, Doris Doe, Brangäne and Friedrich Schorr was Kurvenal.

Mme. Konetzni gave a good if not particularly inspired performance of her part. Her best singing was in the Liebestod. Mr. Pinza, as might be expected, gave a sonorous and dignified performance and proved once more that Wagner can be well sung by good singers of any nationality. Miss Doe, Mr. Althouse and Mr. Schorr repeated their excellent renditions of roles in which they have been heard before. Karl Riedel replaced Artur Bodanzky who was indisposed, and the remaining roles were sung by Messrs. Gabor, Clemens and Wolfe.
