'Turandot' at Metropolitan

Florence Easton Triumphs in Jeritza's Favorite Role

"Turandot" was repeated at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening for the first time without Maria Jeritza in the title role. On this occasion it was sung By Florence Easton, who has assumed the part with the company on tour, and who is entirely competent to give every value to the music, lying as it does almost entirely within the high and best register of her voice.

Her impersonation had dignity and some dramatic force, although it lacked the sensational theatrical impact of Mme. Jertiza's somewhat different method of projection. Vocally it was a real triumph, and she has rarely been more effective than in the middle scene of Act II and the Alfano duet of Act III.

With her in the cast were associated Mr. Lauri-Volpi as Prince Calaf, Elda Vettori as Liu, Pavel Ludikar as Timur. Mario Basiola, listed for the role of Ping, was taken ill yesterday with appendicitis and had to miss a performance for the first time in his career. Millo Picco sang in his stead, with Messrs. Bada and Tedesco as Pang and Pong. Mr. Serafin conducted with his usual understanding and enthusiasm.
