'LA TRAVIATA' DRAWS A CROWD
Bori, Gigli and de Luca Sing to Applause in Verdi's Ever Popular Opera
A house packed with an eager and evidently enjoying crowd was the popular record of yesterday's Christmas matinee at the Metropolitan. To regale this amiable holiday gathering Mr. Gatti-Casazza had chosen "La Traviata," with the result that one and all reveled in the familiar melodies which Verdi, with lavish hand, had poured into the score. Nor did Verdi supply the only excuse for general delight, since "La Traviata" is one of the operas that fares particularly well at the hands and throats of the Metropolitan troupe.
The performance yesterday enjoyed the signal advantage of Miss Lucrezia Bori's collaboration in the role of Violetta. Greater Violettas vocally this town has heard, though Miss Bori's singing of the music can boast both feeling and style and frequent fine tone, but it would be difficult to imagine a more distinguished and winsome dramatic performance than hers or to envisage more ravishing costumes.
Mr. Gigli had a congenial role in Alfredo to whose music his voice and manner or singing are particularly well suited. Then there was the excellent Germont père of Mr. De Luca, sung with an appreciation of the best traditions and with delightful art. Of cardinal importance to the general effect of the presentation one found again the unsurpassable conducting of Mr. Serafin.
