'Egyptian Helen' Is Sung With a New Menelaus

Herr Kirchhoff Shows Zest Which Production Lacks

Last evening brought the third appearance of "The Egyptian Helen" to the Metropolitan Opera and, incidentally, a new Menelaus in the person of Walter Kirchhoff . Repeated hearings of this latest of Strauss work do not inflame the imagination, but the performance itself profits by familiarity and there were many improvements noticeable last evening, especially in the matter of dramatic restraint. In fact, the general presentation came nearly erring on the side of lassitude and the super-casual.

Mr. Kirchhoff, strongly resembling the elder Siegfried, and a fairly personable characterization of the Spartan king, sang with more zest than tonal beauty. Mme. Jeritza repeated her radiant Helena and Mme. Fleischer again charmed the ear with the notes of the sorceress Aithra. Others in the familiar cast were Mmes. Telva, Bourskaya, Falco, Ryan, Flexer, Lerch and Carroll, and Mr. Whitehill. Mr. Bodanzky conducted.
