Frances Alda Gets Ovation In Role of Marguerite

Lacking Few Months of 20 Years at Metropolitan, Her Singing is Best of Career

Lacking only a few months of twenty years as a member of the Metropolitan Opera Company, Mme. Frances Alda made her farewell appearance of the season last evening in what is probably her best role, Marguerite, in "Faust." Although the date has not yet arrived for the general signing and renewing of artist's contacts at the opera, it is generally presumed that Mme. Alda will be back in her old place next season. In her long career she has never sung as well - that is, with such musicianly technique and such clarity and accuracy of tone - as in the last few months. A real personal ovation called her alone before the curtain many times last evening after the second act.

Her principal colleagues on this occasion were Mr. Martinelli, singing the title role more restrainedly than ever, Mr. Bohnen ornamenting the conventional interpretation of Mephistopheles with a score of new and canny gestures and a tempestuous vitality of voice and acting which focused every hearer's attention, and Mr. De Luca, who always wins both sympathy and admiration for his Valentin. Ellen Dalossy's Siebel is the best now available at the Metropolitan and Mr. Wolfe's Wagner and Miss Wakefield's Martha completed the cast. Mr. Hasselmans conducted.
