Review 1:

Review signed J. S. in the New York Tribune

AT THE METROPOLITAN

Mr. Gatti chose Christmas Eve to present what has been considered a rather indeterminate, if melodious, operatic endeavor. It was a "first" for this season, charmingly mounted and sung with all respect to the vocal properties.

Dorothee Manski, though a chortling and expressive witch in "Hänsel," had never sung Giulietta before last night. And Mme. Zirato, sometimes Nina Morgana on both sides of the Metropolitan footlights, returned to the fold as Olympia. Also, it must be remarked Giordano Paltrinieri showed an amazing versatility in three roles.

It was a performance of fair balance. The orchestra, under Mr. Hasselmans, waxed brassily triumphant at times, affecting for the moment the tonal suavities of Mr. Tokatyan. The "Night of Love" - a barcarolle if you go to the movies or taste of canned music - quivered occasionally as though the orchestral pit were an excavation rather than a foundation. Static threw flickering shadows across the "face" of subsequent star-decked choruses. These defects were momentary and did not mar the audience's enjoyment of the old favorite.
