PONSELLE AND MARTINELLI STAR

Famous Soprano and Tenor Win Plaudits at Met

Giuseppe Verdi's "La Forza del Destino" was the offering at the Metropolitan Opera house last night. Rosa Ponselle, Giovanni Martinelli and Giuseppe Danise united to carry off the lion's share of the honors and applause.

Seldom indeed has Mr. Danise appeared to better advantage than in the second scene of the third act, where, torn between conflicting desires, he gives vent to some beautiful singing.

Mr. Martinelli himself was in a surpassing mood and voice, and smoother singing than his we have rarely, if ever, heard. The house, forgetting itself for the moment, went wild over his efforts in this same scene.

Rosa Ponselle, who seems to be born to roles heavily charged with emotion, at times seemed much too emphatic. But the ease and clarity with which she sang, and the beautiful tone quality which flowed without flaw, more than atoned for this fault.

Special mention must be made of Louis D'Angelo, who had the role of the Marquis de Calatrava. Although his part is comparatively small, he at once claimed attention, both from a vocal and dramatic point of view.

Others in the cast were Ina Bourskaya, Ezio Pinza, Pompilio Malatesta, Philene Falco, Paolo Ananian, Giordano Paltrinieri and Vincenzo Reschiglian.

Vincenzo Bellezza conducted with remarkably good results.
