'King's Henchman' Again Sung Before Enthusiastic Throng

Taylor-Millay Opera Repeated at Metropolitan With Cast Which Scored Success in First Performance

"The King's Henchman," the opera by Deems Taylor and Edna St. Vincent Millay, which had its premiere at the Metropolitan on February 17, was repeated last night before a sold-out house. As before, there was much enthusiasm after each act, and Mr. Taylor and Miss Millay were summoned many times before the curtain.

The cast was that of the first performance. Lawrence Tibbett again stood forth among the principals by virtue of the skill and power which he brings to the role of King Eadgar. Mr. Tibbett has done nothing so fine as this at the Metropolitan. The grace and authority of his acting, the beauty and varied expressiveness of his singing and his diction, the affecting tenderness and depth of feeling which he gives to the sorrowful reproaches of the betrayed king in the last act cannot easily be over-praised.

Mr. Johnson, as Aethelwold, Mme. Easton as Aelfrida, Mr. Gustafson as Marcus, Miss. Alcock as Ase, Mr. Meader as Dunstan, and Mr. d'Angelo as Ordgar, completed the cast of principals. Mr. Serafin, as before, filled the performance with emerging vitality and warmth.
