'Aida' at Metropolitan Offers Change in Cast

Maria Müller and Karin Branzell Invest Their Respective Roles With Beauty

The performance of "Aida" at the Metropolitan Opera last night was vitally relieved of its burden of over-familiarity by some conspicuously felicitous changes in the cast. Not that the season has been devoid of excellent "Aida"'s and passionate princesses, but it is quite safe to say that there have been none more impressive in these respective roles than Maria Müller and Karin Branzell. Miss Müller knows how to dress the part, is not afraid of Ethiopian duskiness, and realizes the nicety of the adjustment between royal blood and the slave's estate; but what is more important, she knows how to sing the music, which last night showed her lovely voice in all the fullness of its fine and brilliant powerful texture.

Miss Branzell invests with authority everything which she touches and her Amneris was no exception. Her great scene as she listens and agonizes above the judgment hall was done with sweeping fervor and a prodigal disclosure of temperamental fire and vocal splendor.

Radames is among the best things currently attempted by Mr. Lauri-Volpi, and other roles were in the accustomed hands of Messrs. Mardones, Danise, Paltrinieri and D'Angelo, with Miss Robertson as the voice of the Priestess, and Mr. Serafin at the conductor's desk.
