The First 'Trovatore'

Although "Trovatore" had been sung in concert form at one of the Sunday night concerts, the performance on the evening of Dec. 5 was its first stage performance this season. Rosa Ponselle, announced for Leonora, was ill and unable to sing, but her place was filled more than capably by Frances Peralta. Jeanne Gordon sang Azucena, the rôle in which she made her debut in 1919; Grace Anthony, Inez; Vittorio Fullin, Manrico; Mario Basiola, Di Luna, and the remaining roles were taken by Leon Rothier, Giordano Paltrinieri and Vincenzo Reschiglian. Gennaro Papi conducted.

Miss Peralta made a stately Leonora and sang much of her music most skillfully. "D'Amor sull' Ali Rosee" was as beautiful a piece of vocalization as has been heard in a long time. Miss Gordon sang very well but was a somewhat youthful looking hag. Mr. Fullin improved as the performance proceeded and sang with excellent tone in spite of an unimpressive beginning. Mr. Basiola was at his best and his voice was of great beauty throughout the opera. A word must be said for Mr. Rothier's Farrando. At last "Abbietta Zingara" was really well sung and the [very first] scene made duly impressive.
