Puccini's "Bohème' With Alda and Gigli
"La Bohème," Puccini's ever popular opera of Bohemian life in Paris, had an admirable presentation last night at the Metropolitan Opera House. Frances Alda was Mimi, a role that she has sung with distinction for a decade or more. Not long ago she was suffering from a cold, but her singing last night indicates that she has entirely recovered. Her voice had all of its old time beauty. Particularly effective was her singing of the third act duet, the high water mark of the opera from a musical stand point. Beniamino Gigli was in excellent voice and sang the music of Rodolfo with lovely tone and with the feeling of a true artist. A lively Musetta was Yvonne d'Arle, though she overacted the part which was responsible for a fall at the end of the third act. Her voice has never sounded better than yesterday. Antonio Scotti, Millo Picco and Leon Rothier were the other principals and Gennaro Papi conducted.
