DON CARLO AT OPERA

Saying good-by to Chaliapin for a while had its moments of pang at the Metropolitan last night. He is a Phillip II who looks so significantly royal that it rather makes all other kings rather pallid. Of course, he could not help slipping right out of the role to repeat the "Racanto." It was not in the picture, but his voice was so astounding, so potent, so Feodor Chaliapin that the dramatic traditions did not matter.

Jeanne Gordon looked more beautiful than usual, which is saying something and she sang "O don fatale" as it should be given, with just the right accent, for it is, at least, a florid aria in the Verdian humor of letting a singer go her own way quite regardless of context.

A bit of scenery crashed while Martinelli was singing and the queer submarine ballet was occasionally confused. But Chaliapin took continuous curtain calls, shook his own hands effusively, and the audience went home with what one calls heart throbs.
