Carmen
Metropolitan Opera House, Tue, February 22, 1921
Carmen (263)
Georges Bizet | Henri Meilhac/Ludovic Halévy
"Between the second and third acts they [European Relief Council] presented a tableau arranged by Wladyslaw T. Benda. This symbolized the aid given to the needy peoples of Europe by America. Mrs. Lydig Hoyt, in white robes and with a glittering silver star upon her forehead, represented America upon an eminence of goodwill, with her hands outstretched to a multitude. The colors and effect of the tableau brought forth cheers from the audience and the curtain was lifted again to disclose this mute group with hands upraised, begging for food."
