'BUTTERFLY' CHARMS AUDIENCE AGAIN
Mr. Schmedes' Illness Necessitates Change of Bill from 'Tiefland' In the Metropolitan
APPLAUSE FOR MISS FARRAR
Brilliant Audience Hears Her with Pleasure - Mr. Quarti's Debut as Pinkerton
Owing to the indisposition of Mr. Schmedes, "Madama Butterfly" was given last night in the Metropolitan Opera House instead of "Tiefland," which had been announced.
A large and brilliant audience again applauded Miss Geraldine Farrar's singing and acting. She again made an appealing picture in the rôle of the little Japanese girl who stakes all upon love and loses. The final scene was full of pathos as well as melody.
Mr. Ariodante Quarti, who was heard earlier in the season in "La Bohème," was the Pinkerton. He looked well in the part, but vocally he was hardly equal to the demands of the rôle. Mr. Scotti as Sharpless was admirable and the minor parts were in good hands. Mr. Toscanini conducted.
After the second act Miss Farrar was recalled half a dozen times bringing Miss Fornia, the Suzuki, with her, and finally Mr. Scotti.
