MM. DESTINN AGAIN SHINES IN 'TIEFLAND'
Last night "Tiefland" was performed for the second time this season at the Metropolitan Opera House.
It is not remarkable how the presentation of the emotionally primitive has a hold upon us? We silently enjoy on the stage the display of passions we ourselves deny possession of - glad that the lights are down. Lights up, we resume our masks and talk in refined accents of our appreciation of musical art -feeling that deep beneath our civilized veneer the caveman lies dormant.
If a response to the portrayal of the primitive weren't in us, our composers wouldn't be continually ringing the changes on love, hatred, greed and the rest of the human gamut. We are given what our consciousness calls for.
The joyous in art is at hand. One of these days misery in opera won't pay, however beautiful the music may be.
The cast last night was the same as at the premiere. Mr. Schmedes showed the strain of his unexpected task of Thursday. His acting displayed fine comprehension of the character. Mlle. Destinn was ever in the picture. As Martha she is primitive, intense, forceful, direct, but not alluring. She is a sort of Tess of the d'Urbervilles, made more poignant by d'Alberrt's fitting music.
Mr. Feinhals was in good voice. His strong, clear baritone made Sebastian vivid. The chorus was spirited, and sang well. Hr. Hertz, at the baton, brought forth good volume and succeeded in producing the correct atmosphere in his interpretation of the somber story.
