"LA BOHÈME" SUBSTITUTED.

Mr. Caruso's Illness Prevents Performance of "Manon" at the Metropolitan.

The prevailing series of indispositions among the singers of the Metropolitan Opera House was extended yesterday to Mr. Caruso, who was unable to sing. Consequently the opera billed for the evening, "Manon Lescaut," which was to be given for the second time, had to be withdrawn and in its place was put "La Bohème." Mme. Cavalieri appeared in it as Mini for the first time in New York, and Mr. Dippel appeared as Rodolfo. The cast was otherwise unchanged. Mme. Cavalieri's impersonation of Mimi is characterized by a somewhat explosive and strident vocal style, though she is not lacking at points in strong dramatic instinct. The part has one disadvantage for her in that the 1830 costume, or such adaptation of it as she wears, does not set off her personal beauty to great advantage. Of Mr. Dippel's Rodolfo it can be said that it was painstaking and intelligent.
