Second Hearing of Bizet's Opera This Season at the Metropolitan

Farewells have begun at the Opera House. Miss Fremstad, who had the title rôle of Carmen last night, sang for the last time this season, and Signor Caruso is to be heard but once more. There was another enormous audience to hear the adored tenor.

Herr Conried may confidently count on "Carmen" as one of the operas to be a pillar of strength in his next year's repertoire if he has two such artists in the leading roles. Signor Caruso is a certainty, but Miss Fremstad is said to possess aspirations in the realm of the dramatic sopranos that may interfere with her return to a stage on which she has found such great success as a mezzo soprano. She repeated last night the admirable performance that she first divulged last year. There may be some lack of accent and incisiveness in certain of its dramatic episodes, but as a whole it is a remarkably faithful and alluring incarnation of the Merimée heroine. She had the tribute of applause and flowers and parted from the public with every evidence of its appreciation.

Signor Caruso's voice is beautifully adapted to the music of Don José, both the duet of the first act and in the flower song. The audience last night was curiously apathetic after this number. Possibly it is not Italian enough to draw out the bravos of his faithful compatriots.

M. Journet and Miss Abbott were again Escamillo and Micaela, and the sudden withdrawal of M. Parvis from the cast laid the responsibility of two roles on the experienced shoulders of M. Dufriche. M. Parvis is not too unimportant to suffer from indisposition at rare intervals. M. Vigna conducted.
