THE OPERA SEASON: "SIEGFRIED"

The second division of Wagner's trilogy, which commenced at the early hour of 7 o'clock at the Academy of Music last night, was fairly up to the standard of the prelude of "Die Walküre." The playing of the orchestra was again the principal factor in its success. Herr Dippel has hardly force enough to successfully fulfill the demands of the first act, but in the second and third acts the sincerity of his acting and his absolutely true intonation made his impersonation of the role at least an agreeable, if not a great, one. The drama, however, was lifted out of the rut of commonplaces by the appearance of Fraulein Ternina in the role of Brünnhilde.

No doubt expectation ran high after her many failures to appear last season and the glowing accounts of her abilities which preceded her; but expectation in this case was not dashed to the ground, Her voice is full and rich, her tones mellow, and at the same time of delightful purity; her enunciation is good, her appearance all that could be wished and her gestures at once graceful and intelligent. She has a highly dramatic manner and is a finished actress. Some traces of her recent illness were visible in one or two of her high notes, but with this exception the role was most delightful.

The music drama was given without cuts, and lasted from 7 until 11:22, only forty minutes being allowed altogether for the intermissions between the three acts.
