Review 1:
Review of W. J. Henderson in The New York Times
There were three interesting musical entertainments in this town yesterday. Two of them took place at the Metropolitan Opera House, one in the afternoon and the other in the evening, and those may be dismissed without very extended comment. In the afternoon the second performance of " Siegfried " was given before a numerous and highly demonstrative audience. The cast was not the same as it was at the first performance. Owing, it was announced, to the indisposition of Mme. Melba, Mme, Litvinne was the Brünnhide. This change was distinctly to the advantage of the representation as a whole, for while Mme. Litvinne is not an ideal Valkyr, her voice and style are much better suited to such a dramatic rôle than those of Mme. Melba. The result of her presence was that the final duo was more effective than it was at the first performance and it did not require the aid of M. Jean de Reszke's final high C to bring it to a brilliant close.
M. de Reszke's performance of the young hero showed a pleasing gain in point of freedom and elasticity. Vocally and intellectually it showed the same admirable qualities as it did on Wednesday night. It is a glorious achievement and will probably be still more glorious as the great artist grows into the part. M. Edouard de Reszke repeated his imposing impersonation of Wotan, and Messrs. Bispham and Von Hübbenet were again excellent as Alberich and Mime. Miss Mina Schilling was the forest bird, but the bird sang flat. The work of the orchestra was better than at the first performance. Mr. Seidl conducted the work, as he always does, like a master.
