Two Performances of Grand Opera.

There were two performances at the Metropolitan Opera House yesterday, one in the afternoon and another in the evening. At the matinee "Carmen" was performed to a good-sized audience. Indeed, considering the fact that the cast was not to be compared with that which aroused public interest early in the winter, the audience was remarkably large. Mme. Calvé appeared for the last time as Carmen, for tomorrow evening she will be seen in only one act of the opera. Her performance was received with demonstrations of pleasure by those present. The Micaela was Mme. Sigrid Arnoldson. The other members of the cast were M. Maguiere as Don José, M. Martapoura as Escamillo, Signor Viviani as Zuniga, and Signori Carbone and Rinaldini and Mlles. Bauermeister and Ibles in the minor parts.

Last night the other battle horse of the season, Gounod's "Faust," was presented. The house was a very large one, for, although there were some empty seats, the number of those who stood was great. As usual, there were very many who had never heard Gounod's masterpiece before, and who followed the performance closely with the libretto. It was impossible to avoid envying them the great delight of hearing such beautiful music for the first time.

The cast was that which has been called "ideal" consisting of Mme. Eames as Marguerite, Mme. Scalchi as Siebel, Mlle. Bauermeister as Marta, Jean de Reszke as Faust, Edouard de Reszke as Mephistopheles, M. Lassalle as Valentine. and Signor de Vaschetti as Wagner. All the artists were in excellent voice, and the result was a superb performance. As soon as Messrs. Abbey and Grau offer such entertainment to the public they may be sure of generous patronage. This evening Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" will be sung, with Mme. Melba in the title rôle and Signor Vignas as Edgardo.
