Last Night of the Opera.

The season of grand opera in French and Italian under the management of Abbey & Grau, at the Metropolitan Opera House, came to a close last night, with the fourteenth performance in this city of "Carmen." For some reason the house was far from being full but the audience evinced a determination to atone for its comparative smallness by an abundance of applause. The principal artists were called out a number of times, and flowers were thrown in great profusion from the boxes. Mme. Calvé, Signor de Lucia, and M. Lassalle were the objects of especial favor, and the prima donna carried off the stage a goodly load of roses.

The performance presented some particular features for comment. Mme. Calvé, it is worth noting, was evidently very well aware that it was the last performance of the season, and she acted with an abandon that at times approached carelessness. Indeed, in the second act, she was considerably out in her singing in one passage, and manifested much impatience with the prompter because he did not give her sufficient help.

Signor de Lucia, on the other hand, never gave a better performance of vociferous enthusiasm, and drew flowers from the boxes like a prima donna. M. Lassalle added much to the effectiveness of this act by his excellent work, and Mlle. Pettigiani deserves a word of praise for her pretty delivery of Micaela's lovely solo. At the end of the opera there were further demonstrations of great pleasure.

In the afternoon Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" was admirably performed. At the end of the opera there were many recalls. Mme. Nordica sang an English ballad, Mme. Arnoldson a Swedish air, and Mme. Eames "The Last Rose of Summer."
